Prof. Musa Bukoma. Moya (Ph.D), is a Computing, Information Technology and Statistics, full science Professor at Makerere University Business School. A holder of Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D in ICT, Master of Statistics and B.Sc. Statistics of Makerere University. Worked diligently for 28 years and grown systematically in ranks to full Professor and Dean at Makerere University Business School. Eighteen years (18) in management, nine (9) as Dean and ten as Head of department, 19 years as MUBS council member (2003 to date) and Acting Principal in 2014 and 2016 for 2 months respectively.
He is currently academic and administrative pioneer Dean Faculty of Science Education and Formerly Pioneer Dean, Faculty of Computing and Informatics for 5 years (June 2017 to June 2022) with 3 departments of computer science and engineering, applied computing and IT and Department of information systems. Dean, Faculty of Computing and Management Science with 3 departments for 3 years 2014-to May 2017, Deputy Dean, for 1 year Faculty of Computing and Management Science and pioneer Head of Business Computing Department at Makerere University Business School for 10 years. The former faculties had over 180 academic staff with 8 administrative staff and student population of over 4000, annually graduating about 1100 on average.Led the Development of new curriculum in 2004 Bachelor of Business Statistics, Bachelor of Business Computing, Bachelor of Office and Information Management. In 2022 Postgraduate Diploma in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics, Degree in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics, Diploma in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics, Team member curriculum development of PhD in Operations Research 2014, Masters in Operations Research 2014, Postgraduate Diploma in ICT Policy and Regulation in 2005, and 6 other Business and management postgraduate degrees at MUBS.
Mentored and coached over 15 Heads of Department and 6 Deans and Deputy Deans at MUBS, 200 academic staff in MUBS, 6 at University of Dar es Salaam, 5 at Kampala International University and 4 at Makerere University.
Professor Moya has examined in over 8 Universities in 8 African Countries, Under NeTel Africa Consortium on Postgraduate Diploma ICT Policy and Regulation online teaching ICT510 and ICT508 from 2006 to 2012. From 2012 examined at University of Nairobi, School of Business 2012-2014, currently PhD External Examiner University of Nairobi, Examiner at University of Dar es Salaam on PhD in Operations Research, Examiner Kyambogo University, PhD and Masters External examiner Kampala International University and ICT University Cameroon to date.
Evaluator and assessor of publications for promotion to positions of Professor, Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer positions at Various Universities in Uganda and in the region.
He has vast experience of over 28 years in administration and academics, research, consulting in computer based information systems, design and analysis of surveys , data modelling and analysis , ICT4D, Operations research and statistics. He was the Country Representative and Uganda Chapter Chairman of the Operations Research Society of Eastern Africa (ORSEA) for 14 years.
Rated as one of the top best 200 scientists 2022 in Uganda by AD Scientific Index 2022 and 2023 version 1 and 2.
A reviewer of manuscripts and papers in over 6 international refereed journals.
Consultant in computing, design and analysis of surveys, data modelling and analysis, ICT, operations research and statistics with Government of Uganda ministries, authorities, directorates, departments and private agencies. Professor Moya has co-authored four books and over 50 international refereed publications. Supervised 8 PhD Students to completion, supervised 73 master’s degree students to completion, advised, mentored and coached over 80 Ph.D Candidates and 73 Ph.D already graduated.
Has participated in writing 6 large grant proposals at Makerere University Business School in Uganda. One of the funded proposals under ADB funded the construction and furnishing of new 3 floor two wing faculty of Computing offices, 4 big computer laboratories with capacity of 1000 computers, video and audio conference rooms and 2 lecture theatres. Won STEP Grant by RCE-VIHSCM, GAVI, UPS and IFPW (AmerisourceBergen) – August 2016- for training participants from United States 2, Geneva 2, Rwanda 3, Tanzania 4 and 20 Uganda.
Baseline , midline and end line survey grants office of the prime minister, Strengthening Capacity for ICT Usage and policy reforms for relevant and quality masters research process and management in Uganda’s higher Institutions of learning Erasmus grant, Agri business grant Erasmus grant, RIF Makerere developing enzyme to eradicate polythene in Uganda, RIF Developing preservatives for fruits and vegetables in Uganda and RIF Assistive technologies usage by students with disability in public Universities in Uganda among others.
He has been Co-organiser of ICT4 Africa conferences since 2010 and ORSEA international conferences since 2004 to date. Attended over 30 international conferences.
Led team of faculty staff who have published over 250 publications in faculty of computing and management science since 2014, Faculty of computing and informatics 2017 to June 2022 and now Faculty of Science Education.
Over 60 staff under my leadership as Dean have graduated with masters and seven with PhDs.
Dr. Abbey Mutumba, Dr. Denis Male, Prof. Musa Moya, Dr. Samali V. Mlay and Gift Arnold Mugisha (2022). Development of Freza, a nanotechnology-based preservation solution for shelf life extension of fruits and vegetables for the local farmer, retailer and vendor in Uganda. Obtained a grant of UGX 98,000,000 from Makerere Research and Innovation Fund.
